Eye-Opening Photos That Put Size into Perspective

By Yuri S.

There are many things in this world – be them man-made structures and objects, natural landscapes, or animals – that we know are enormous. We can Google images of them and even look up measurements and statistics to try and ascertain their sheer size and scale. However, it can be hard to truly appreciate how impressive they are this way. Sometimes, a photograph that positions its subject in a certain way, or draws comparisons between the sizes of different subjects, can put size into perspective and really open our eyes as to how big something is.

Unsurprisingly, the internet is full of these clever and intriguing photographs that allow us to make a more realistic assumption of the proportions of certain objects – and we searched at length to find the best five. So, courtesy of the worldwide web, here are the top five eye-opening photographs that will put size into perspective.

Giant Ball of Fluff

The Great Pyrenees, otherwise known as the Pyrenees Mountain Dog, is a large, immensely powerful working dog that was originally bred in the 17th century to deter wolves and other predators from stealing the livestock they guard on snowy mountaintops. Males can grow up to 31 inches in height and reach a staggering 120 pounds.

It’s hard, however, to truly gauge how big these dogs are without seeing a picture like this that allows you to make a comparison with an everyday object – in this case, an average-size woman. Standing up on its hind legs, this Great Pyrenees like it could eat her if he wanted to – hopefully, it’s just playing, or this lady could be in serious trouble!

Comet vs. Los Angeles

We’ve all heard of the Big Bang that was responsible for wiping out the dinosaurs, and meteorologists and astronomists have warned that there’s an underlying threat of it happening one day again. It’s been the basis of many Hollywood blockbuster films that depict the end of the world as we know it.

Of course, this picture isn’t real, but it does show the huge size of a comet compared with Los Angeles – and there’s no doubt about it, the entire city would be totally wiped out instantly. It’s a stark reminder that the world we humans have created on this planet could be ended by something that is completely out of our control.

Creatures of the Deep Blue Sea

Despite recent advancements in technology, the deep blue sea is still a relative mystery to us – in fact, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the bottom of the ocean. What we do know, however, is that the water is home to a vast array of animals, with the blue whale being the largest of them all.

It’s not easy to picture how large these whales are, though. So, a picture of an average-size person lying next to a whale skull – such as the one featured here – can be a real eye-opener. If that’s just its skull, you can only imagine how imposing the entire body would be as well. It’s incredible to think animals that big reside beneath the surface of the water.

The Signs You Can’t-Miss

Most of us see road signs every day, whether we’re commuting to and from work, driving to visit friends, or even while we’re walking. While they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, the road signs that you find on freeways, highways, and expressways are the most impressive – but have you ever appreciated how enormous they actually are?

Well, this picture showcases that perfectly – it’s easy to miss the guy who’s bent over the end working on it, who’s dwarfed by its size. It makes you contemplate the effort that goes into making signs this large – and then to put it up over the road afterward. You’ll never look at them in the same way again!

The Greatness of the Great Pyramid

Of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex outside of Cairo, Egypt, the Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest. Not only that, but it is also the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one to remain largely intact. As such, it attracts millions of tourists from around the world every year, most of whom are left in awe.

Unless you’re lucky enough to travel to Egypt, however, it’s difficult to understand exactly how great the pyramid is. That is unless you see a picture like this one, which really puts its sheer size into perspective – and it also makes you appreciate the effort that it must have taken to build it. The woman posing at the bottom looks tiny, with an uncountable amount of stone blocks above her – each one the length of her upper body!
